Sorghum breeding in Ethiopia: Progress, achievements and challenges

Sorghum is a critical crop especially in semiarid areas where there inadequate moisture.it the fifth important among cereals. C4 plant which originated and diversified Ethiopia. It used for feed, fuel, consumed by human beings form of enjera, boiled porridge or gruel, malted beverages, beer, popped grain, chips. In Ethiopia, biotic, socioeconomic, abiotic restrictions limit sorghum production productivity. Drought, Striga, disease, insect pests etc are major problems breeding program Melkassa Agricultural Research Center, part Ethiopian Institute, charge coordination National regional improvement programs have released many open-pollinated hybrid varieties Ethiopia’s various agro-ecological zones.
